Staged in conjunction with the annual Beef Expo at Manfeild, Feilding, young cattle enthusiasts are encouraged to come along, with or without a steer of their own, and learn all about preparing, handling and leading animals into the show ring for showing. When the event is completed the steers are trucked to Land Meats for slaughtering and the carcasses are assessed to see which the best carcass in the Hook competition is.
Participants also complete educational modules to learn more about the Beef Farming Industry. This year’s modules were Animal Health (run by Totally Vets Ltd), Feed Budgeting (run by Rebecca Rowe), Value Cuts Identification, Stock Judging, Structural Assessment and ‘Ready Steady Cook’.
The participants compete towards an Intermediate and Senior Beef Ambassador. The points they obtain in Handling, Judging, Modules, Speeches and Interviews are accumulated to find the winners. This years Intermediate Beef Ambassador was Will Gibson and the Senior Beef Ambassador was Rowan Sandford.
