Stud Focus

The focus is on breeding big sound Simmental sires to mate over the beef herds of New Zealand, as well as breeding stud sires. Approximately twenty of the second string bulls are sold every November as yearlings to dairy farmers.
2013 will see Beresford hold its first on farm bull sale, after selling bulls at the Combined Owaka Bull Sale for over twenty years

Background

Beresford Simmental Stud was established in 1981 with cows purchased from the Sycamore herd. Over the years, cows have been bought in from various stud dispersal sales. Originally bulls were bred to support the commercial operation – 400 plus females and supply bulls to local clients.

Number of Cows

2013 will see Beresford calve approximately 150 stud Simmental cows and heifers, along with 80 Murray Greys and 50 Simmental x Hereford cows.

Size and contour of farm

Beresford is 1180 hectares of rolling to steep Catlins bush country – with approximately 200 hectares still in bush and scrub and the balance in pasture or bush burn.

Other Stock in farming operation

4200 Turanganui ewes, 1100 hoggets, 40 bull calves, 50 heifer calves, and 10 sires.

Natural or AI mating
All cows are mated naturally with heifers first calving as 2yr olds to a Simmental or a Murray Grey Bull.
